Blogging Instructions - PLEASE READ!!

Here are some basic instructions about how to use this blog:

1. Click the Sign In link at the top right. If you have a google or gmail account, sign in. If not, please go to google.com or gmail.com and create one. Then, re-type in our blog address (greenfieldsoc308.blogspot.com) and sign in. Do NOT create a new blog... you're participating in the one that I established for us.

2. Then, click on the link that says Blogging Instructions - PLEASE READ! (Next week, the new blog title will be Week Two -- how creative!). Read any comments posted and then type in your thoughts in the Post a Comment box and click Post Comment. When you want to go back and read others' posts, just click on the same link, and you'll have access to everyone's ideas.

3. To reiterate the expectations, at some time before Sunday of each week, I would like for you to post a 2 paragraph statement which offers your thoughts/reflections about any issues raised in class during the previous week. Then, before class on Tuesday, you need to post a 1-2 paragraph comment to at least two of your classmates about their posts. Any questions -- please contact me. Have fun!

  1. In this class I just want to be able to leave with more knowledge than I entered the class with. I want the class to feel as though we can talk amongst one another in a respectful and calm environment. I want our class to become a family so that we can motivate one another when we feel as though there is a problem. I see that we have a mixture of age groups in our class so in no way should we just not pay attention when someone older has something to say. Remember they have lived longer and have great things to tell us but we just have to be open and listen. I feel good about the class because Dr. Greenfield is going to push us because he knows what we are capable of. I want to leave class every night with a profound thought in my head. I want to be able to discuss things out of class that I have learned in class. I know this class is going to be a journey but its one that I don't mind taking.

  2. Ms. Daniels, thank you for being the first one to post and for mentioning some excellent points. I appreciate your willingness to challenge us all to be respectful and, in Gandhi's, to "be the change we wish to see the world."

  4. Ms.Daniells, speaking on my behalf, and apologizing ahead time, i am one of those who have a passion for knowledge, and have in the past become a little (ok alot) excited in class, and been very strong with my personal opinions. After reflecting and taking Dr. Greenfields advice, i have to learn how to pull back a little, and voice my thoughts and feelings in a different way, also taking in consideration other ways of doing things. So i am still going to be verball and opinionated, but in a more profound way without offending, being overbearing, and not seeing the whole picture objectively, also i am going to listen, and learn
. But please don't hold it against me if i slip, i am a work in progress. peace

  5. We talked about the first black president and how that came about. I feel that it was in gods time that it happen. We have had some good presidents in the past but i really don't know what to think about our first black president. Any one can say all the right things that they want to get done while in office but who knows what he is really up against. He can say that he will give us the world but that does not mean that it is going to happen. I feel that we should just wait and see what is going to happen in the months to come. I am glad that we have a black president and i hope that he do what he said that he will do but if not then it's not a big deal to me because t have been through so much in life that sometimes i feel like whatever happens let it. Maybe one day i will change the way i feel. But much luck to the new black president.

  6. Watson, I am looking forward to this semester also. I have two classes with Dr. Greenfield also and i had one with him last semester. He is a great teacher and i will never forget him. He pushed me when i didn't want to talk in class or interact with the other students in class. We will learn a lot from Dr. Greenfield. I can't wait for our next class on Tuesday.

  8. Well as you know Dr. Greenfield this is not the first time that I have had a class with you. I am anxious to get this class underway. Although I know I wasn't the best student, before, when it came to the class, but I will say that I will be very attentive, I will be vocal, and I will voice my opinions when I have opinions about things we talk about. I will admit that even though I can talk a lot, I am sort of afraid of speaking in front of people. I want to work on that. I am a senior and I cannot wait to walk across that stage. I will strive for an "A" and I will give my all. Let's get it started Greenfield!

  9. Ms. Wilkins I totally agree with what you said about our first black president. I do feel that it maybe was time for the country to have a black president. I must say that this will probably be the hardest four years in his life that he will ever face. He will always be scrutinized with anything he does. I know this isn't the same thing, but his presidency will be like the movie, "Remember The Titans". The coach wasn't allowed to lose any football game and I think his presidency will be looked at like this. I feel that if he doesn't get things turned around in the 1st few months, people will be ready to count him out. It's not fair, but life has never been fair. I wish him nothing but the best. MY PRESIDENT IS BLACK!!!!

  10. I agree with most of my peers comments; I too, find any class with Dr. Greenfield to be mentally stimulating, challenging and rewarding. Our brief discussion of the different catalyst of social change piqued my interest. When those agents are broken down into individual happenings I am able to grasp a clearer understanding but tying it to the big picture (macro influence) still has me a little baffled. On one hand social change seems to start with defiance by some unsung hero or heroine, Rosa Parks (micro level) yet on the other hand, our government (macro level) also wields great influence in social change by its manipulation and control over educational resources and attainment, poor socio-economic conditions and it’s costly efforts to stay abreast of the advancement(s) in technology.

I’m particularly interested in understanding the sociologist perspective because I’m sure it will strengthen my foundation as a social worker which in turn would enable me to be more proficient at my skill. How is society affected by the social structures (e.g. the family, education, social stratification, etc.) social systems (e.g. culture and identity, agents of social control, etc.) and social issues (e.g. the causes of crime, the impact of unemployment, etc.)? I realize one semester is hardly enough time to digest the fullest understanding but my hopes are to leave this class with a strong foundational support

  11. Keisha, I am glad that someone feel the way that i do about our black president. I do wish him the best but he will have to be on top of things every step of the way. Lets just wait and see what happens in the months to come. We will be following him close in the next few months. I look forward to sharing this semester with you in Dr. Greenfield classes.

  12. This is the third class that I've had with Dr. Greenfield. As with any class that we all take with him it's important that your realize that he will challenge some of our thoughts. Then you may start to re-think some of your ideologies. As an educator and future professor (inspired by Dr. Greenfield), it is very important to me to look at all of the students in my school at face value and try to get a better understanding of what their story is. All of them weren't born with a silver spoon. So far, Dr.Greenfield has help me to be a little bit more optimistic and broaden my mentality. From this class, I would like to continue this broadening and help others with the concept also.
WOW! We will witness history tomorrow. I am so glad to be a part of that because I'm quite sure that I was one of the one's that doubted the thought of an African-American president.

  13. The world was built in 7days,that is the greatest and shortest accomplishment made by anyone of great significance (that i know of) Obama will not and can not fix the world in a few months. It is sad that the expectations of him will be based on what he can do in just a couple of months, or years. It didn't take Bush a day to screw *&#t up,so we have to give our new president the opportunity to change things. We also must remember that he is not the beginning and the end of all....he has to go through legislature, congress, etc, before anything can be done. There is always protocal, or steps he has to go through before he can just do something. My question is will he be set up to fail? Because he has to answer to others will their actions cause him to be scrutinzed by the public? Also we are a fast food world, we want what we want, when we want it,we can"t shoot the problems in the "world microwave" and zap, it is done. It takes time, and we as citizens need to learn patients.

  14. Crystal,
I was you also last semester. I learned to think about an idea or perspective and comment later. We all have different perspectives and have different stories. I am glad that we have these blogs because I would always have a AHA moment when I got home or wish I would have shared my opinion. I think that it is important to listen to one another because we all bring different flavors to the table. I've always heard and been taught that the truth "will set you free"! Whatever the truth is!

  15. Nazeidre, i too am looking into teaching, also influenced by Greenfield, that is a task to behold. If i do venture down that path i only hope i am half the teacher he is. If our public schools had more teachers like him, and some of the other teachers i have incountered at Shaw, we possibly could have a good chance at more students becoming Presidents, doctors and lawyers. Public school teachers are held at a disadvantage because they are limited in what they can say and do,so with them being limited to what they teach, they get discouraged, along with all the other bs, they have to deal with. Greenfield i think is trying to start a new generation of teachers who will make changes that will benefit the students, and help them want to learn.

  16. This semester in class I plan to stay focused and attain the general information of this course. I hope to learn how to openly discuss my feelings about issues in class and with other students. I hope that my way of elaborating will come easier for me this semester because this is a major stepping stone for me towards graduation. I hope to also learn how others think and hopefully I can see things in there perspective also.

I am very interested in learning how the interactions of others can contribute to change in our society. Class seems to be interested so far and I'm a little nervous about the expectation you have for me. I hope that I can recieve the knowledge that is necessary, and apply it in life.

  17. Keisha I can agree to your post to Ms. Wilkins. I do think it was time for America to recieve our first Black President. I am so pride of his accomplishments as a leader not because he was black. I don't see things in black and white, I just see things in good or bad. I can say I'm really not in the Obama spirit like most people, but I did vote for him, and I do wish him well, but do you think America is putting major emphasis on his race rather than what he has done good as a person. Like Martin Luther King Jr. I do believe that we are truely becoming a nation that will not judge you on the color of your skin, but by the content of your character.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Rell, I agree that this nation is some what becoming one where it is about the character. But, this election wasn't so much as about race as it was about how flawlessly he ran his campaign. Obama's compaign was better than McCain's and he got the attention of the American people. A lot of people think that the African-American population is the one who really elected him, but I feel like Obama connected to those undecided Americans and those few republicans who just didn't agree with McCain's philosophies. I do wish him the best as well as you do. A lot of people say that Martin Luther King, Jr is the most influential black person in American history, you can add Barack Obama to that list now.

  19. Rell84, it was time for a change and it was right on time for a black president but we need to just wait and see what is going to happen in the months to come. He will be watched close and any thing that go wrong they will be on top of him. So we must hope for the best and i guess stand behind him until he can see us through this. Looking forward to this semester with all of you.

  21. I am sitting glued to the t.v. and i am in such an emotional state as our first African American president stearnly walks to claim his position, i cry not because i am sad, i cry for freedom, i cry for my parents who are not here to share this moment,i cry for all who fought for our rights to live.I cry for struggles past and present, i cry to the heavens for letting me live for such a moment, to cry. I cry joyous tears for my daughter her future, and possibilities, tears flow because "my country tis of thee" from sea to shining sea"people are taking this moment in time to their graves, i cry for history and herstory of hope and determination,i cry for our military troops who fight a good fight although the battle is... the lords. I cry because across the sea, true decendants of the world cheer on their brother, their son, their blood line has accomplished what was deemed impossible. I shed tears for all those who carry hatred in their hearts, i cry because "tho i walk through the valley of death i will fear no evil" i cry because now we all have to step up to the plate of success, doubt, and admonishment,i cry for those who may fall short, i cry because i am a part of history, i just cried because i needed to empty myself of all the anticipation built because we, i,just helped make a statement to the world, that anything is possible if i/we stop crying, tighten up my/our boot straps, and dig deep to accomplish a goal that seemed too far to reach, i cried for hope, liberty and justice for all, i cried because i needed to cry because my damned boss wouldn't let me off so i could go to DC,,Damm!!!!! i am crying.

  22. Today i watch the first black president take his oath and i must say that i was very happy for him and his family and for us to have such a great leader like him. I feel that he will do his best to pull us out of this and have us on top again. I am looking forward to following his progress. I hope that every one will come together as one now. We will see in the months to come what the real deal will be and if our new president will do what he said that he can do for us. I wish him the best.

I as always will give you 100% and know that you expect no less. The class seem to be interesting thus far and I was excited about the enthusiatism that the student had at our last meeting.

  24. Mrs. Teresa I'am glad that we have something in common "knowledge." With something as powerful we could take over the world. Also, when we get in this class let's take as much as we can and apply to all areas in our life so that we can become the great men and women I know that we are.

  25. I just agree with everyone about our black president. I watched the Inaguration and I had chills because it was such a beautiful thing. I understand that our country is under alot of turmoil but give him time because I believe that everything that he has said it will get done. God Bless America!!!

  27. Speaking if "Social Change" The most exciting social change in my lifetime took place on 01/20/09, do you agree? Witnessing the Inaugration of the 1st African-American President was something I had once only hoped for. To our young people, you now know, that in your life anything truly is possible if you work hard and stay focused!!!

  28. "i" think social change should address what people do,but most people react on what they feel, and their own ideas and perceptions of what is and what is not. The only way we can have a social change is by "doing" are actions determine the outcome. We can feel all we want but doing is going to be more productive. They are both "actions" but our feelings won't change anything if we don't react on our feelings. That sounds confusing to me as i type it but i hope you all understand

    ReplyDelete
  29. Crystal, I agree! Social change is linked closer to the issue through one's response, rather than the way they feel @ an issue. There is no real measure as to how one feels @ an issue.People change their feelings all the time. But,the way we respond can be measured, example: Many Americans went around chanting "it's time for a change", I did myself. But, I, as well as many others, stepped-up to the plate to ensure change in America by electing President Obama.

  30. I believe the teachers should change some of their teaching ways and adpated to the new thing in life. The professor should be more open minded and not so much into abook. They should put real life experience with the lesson. my major is criminal justice one of my favorite professor was dr. gerald. i love his teaching methods. he put real expericnce with it. i learn better that way.
