The "Rule" Discussion

I really enjoyed our lively discussion of whether certain commonly accepted behavioral patterns constitute social "rules." What do you think, and how does it impact social change?

  1. In class, I really couldn't get past the idea that a "rule" is something that has to be done. And if it's not done, then there are consequences. People who live in areas where the "rule" is gang or nothing, I feel like everyone has a choice. Everyone has a choice to do whatever they want to do. Yeah, okay, some choices for some are harder than others, but there is still a choice. I think this impacts society because things that happen in life with "rules" sometime affect the little people. I feel like if I can make it out, everyone can. Still to this day, where I live, there are gangs and violence. Yes, my mother worked and put in me and my siblings heads that we HAVE to go to school and we WILL graduate from high school. My mother has 4 kids. 3 have graduated and she has one more on pace to also graduate. In order to get these people to change, we have to set examples and continue to lead by example and the ones who are tough, you have to break down. You have to find out what makes them sad and use it to show them that there is another way besides the gang way.

  2. Finally this old guy gets into the Blog scene, you see I learn something new everyday.
Anyway concerning our discussion of rule or unspoken rule discussion we had in class last Thursday. I think there are both types of rules in our society. The neighborhood I grew up in had several illegal liquor house or juke joints in the neighborhood and all the neighbors knew who was selling liquor and gambling. The neighbor would frequent these house from Friday evening until Sunday and most were working class people who indugled in this type of behavior on the weekend but it did not prevent them from going to work Monday through Friday. Today we have drug and crack houses in neighborhoods and people frequent them more and they tend to not work and are dependent on these drugs to the point were they are willing to rob and still for them. I think rules are spoken and unspoken depending on what it is that we may be talking about.

  3. Keisha,
You make some great points and I think you unbringing is great but remember everyone do not having loving parents (mom and dad) that try to instill values in their kids. Some kids are raising themselves because the mom is out in the street herself. You are truly bless for having had a mother who instill great values in you and your siblings. I think depending on the circumstances you can have spoken or unspoken rules. Look at people who belong to Faternities and Sororities. Do you think they have rules and upspoken rules base on the fact that they belong to these organizations. Think about that and lets continue our discussion Tuesday night in class before Professor Greenfield arrives.

  4. I had typed a whole lot of stuff but this dumb thing kicked it out, but my point was,the "system,or the man" as some would say, put the liquer stores and drugs out in the poorer neighborhoods, because they knew it would make them money. Some people are quick to blame the system, but they make the choice to use the products.

  5. lol ( laugh out loud) the computer did the same thing to me, all I am saying is that rules can be unspoken because we come across then in our everyday life, without realizing it. We have plenty of unspoken rules when we get into a relationship, we just do it just to make the significant other feel good and vise versa.

  6. .... To piggy back on shawnas's comments, I beleieve that rules are simple social constructs. People use rules to feel good about themselves; and contend that they have a good beed on the world/society.I believe that in most cases they are(rules)there to simply keep us (society) in place; A rule is only NOT a rule when people question its preface, It is up to them to then decide whether they should do the opposite, that is the true effect of social change.... I Beleive

  7. Yes a rule can be spoken or unspoken but some rules are put out there for a reason- CONTROL. Like the laws that we abide everyday, like littering, speeding, and murder. These rules that we're are discussing are constructed by "the man (society)" for gain. It's like a system. The stores put the candy stuff by the register for a reason and just like the liquor houses. They know that poor people will buy the liquor regardless. Think about it. You will not find liquor stores near upper class neighborhoods!

  8. the damned thing did it again, anyway it is harder to find a ABC store in the so called upper class neighborhood. Go on Capital and see where the liquer stores are, they are tucked in corners, ask me how i know. Walmarts in different areas either jack up the prices, or make them lower, and convient stores are all over the hood, anyone ever wonder why they call them convient, and who is it convient for? I read an article, that said Walmart was considering putting a store in the Southgate area, they changed there minds. Did it have anything to do with the fact there are poorer families there, hell Southgate is lil mexico, they love Walmart, they don't realize how much money they lost not putting it there. whats the unspoken rule there?

  10. CRSYTAL I DNT THINK THE RULE WAS UNSPOKEN I THINK THAT WHOLE PUTING A STORE IN THE SOUTHGATE AREA WASNT COMPLETE BECAUSE YOU DONT WANT TO PUT A STORE IN AN AREA OF ONLY SPANISH,MEXICAN ECT SPEAKING PEOPLE YOU WOULD WANT TO PUT THE STORE IN AN WHERE IT WOULD BE MORE DIVERSE...RGT??? I DNT KNOW IF THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.... AS FOR AS UNSPOKEN RULE I BELIEVE ITS SOMETHINH THAT OTHERS KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO REGARDLESS...LIKE CLOSING THE DOOR WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE KNOW ONE TELLS YOU TO DO SO YOU DO IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW THATS WHAT YOUR SUSPOSE TO DO...I GUESS YOU WOULD SAY YOUR MORALS?????....

  12. Rules can be spoken or unspoken. I consider a rule to be just like a norm. You know what you are suppose to do whether it's said or not. You also have to look at the fact that some of these people have problems in these neighborhoods that they can't go to the doctor and take care of. Instead they run to the liqour store and the drug dealers to help take care of their problems. Not saying that it's right but that could be the reason why there are liquor stores put in those neighborhoods. The companies might know that is where they are going to make their profit. The person does have a choice not to go there but sometimes they choose the method of self medicating themselves.

  13. Rules are very important and necessary in order to see sufficient change in our society. For instance with politics, there would be no order or rules, no true function in society, and no control over the things people do. Rules have always been in place to regulate the flow of society’s function. Our society has two types of rules, spoken and unspoken. To me spoken rules have consequences, but those rules that are unspoken which may not have consequence can sometimes be seen as worse, depending on the person. With out rules society would have no social order or stability. Rules can often sometimes limit what we say or do in our life. A lot of the time rules are unspoken and not necessarily set in stone.

  14. I'm not sure who in particular used the example about candy at the store, but my thoughts about that vary. Stores may choose to put candy at the front of the store to attract people to buy it, but I don't think that’s the only reason they put it there. If those candy bars where down a major isle in the store do you think they would sell out...NO? People would be slipping them in there purses and in there pockets. I think placing them at the front of the store just saves business money. What about those stores who keep the all together, do they lose sells no.
