Great discussions tonight! Let's talk more about how to bridge the gap between the Millennial Generation and their teachers/professors (high school, college, etc.).
I didn't attend class on thursday but i believe i got the gist of the discussion. I believe that there are several things that can be done to bridge the gaps between younger students and older teachers. The millennium generation has seen the greatest improvement in american society since the introduction of the model T. I believe that it is the duty of the teachers to keep themselves up to date and knowledgeable about changes within there field. Technology can be used to both bridge and dismantle obstacles, Teachers have to figure which one they want to be a part of, the bridging of obstacles lay in the ability
This is a major issue not just at the college and high school level but also at the elementary age. These new and old teachers are lacking the technique of "differentiation". All students, young, middle-age, and older, have different ways in which they learn. We need the combination of new school and old school teaching styles to help students to learn more. Students can be visual, audio, or hands on types of learners. The old school need to learn how to keep students engaged and interested because if they don't then the students will start texting or plug in the I-pods or Mp3 players. Sitting in a chair lecturing in the front of the room the whole time is not going to make it happen. The new teachers get afraid too quickly and loose it. Or, they don't take the time to develop a relationship with the students. Learning has to be made practical too. Also another key element is reteaching. You have to go back and make sure that the students got it!!Don't assume.
I think that Dr. Greenfield is the exception to the rule of teaching. He has developed the epitome of what teaching actually looks like for the young, middle-age, and the old. It needs to be a world-wide teaching technique because if not then students will come to class and not learn a thing. They'll be happy with the C. Sorry this is my passion..........I get long-winded.
Well, as I stated in class, the gap it there and the older generation is who has to "meet standards" so to speak. Thechnology is so advanced, which is a good thing I guess, but it left us, the "babyboomers" behind. We learned through memory and repetition, where as youth of today just jump in w/ both feet, "sink or swim" not room for just floating around. And yes, I am imitated by computers, cell phones, I-pods and the like. This equipment moves way too fast for me. I'm not good @ multi-tasking and I know this. And if we are honest w/our selves, many of us, 45 and above aren't either. So what do we do, we continue to seek knowledge about new technology and pray that the younger generations are kind to us and do not "LOL"!
i wasnt in class lil one had a fever of 103 plus over the weekend ( she's getting better) by reading the few comments posted i believe the conversation discuss in class was how technolgy has changed from one generation to the next...honestly i believe for the newer generation (my age group 18 plus) technolgy has handicapped us (yes) cell phones, i pods, GPS,internet, etc... think about it like this if you were to lose your cell phone right now how many numbers off the top of your head can you call if you were by a nearby payphone...not many why because most of your numbers are on speed dial and you remember that person's speed dial number...(not good)...internet when you need to look up something you go right to google or yahoo somewhere else besides the encyclopedia or library. i beilieve that the newer generation looks for the easy way because they dnt have anyone challenging them whereas the older generation there was someone there to push them and motivate them to do better...alot of the teachers nowadays think its okay to sit in front of the class in read out of the text book (not cool) I can do that at home...some teachers even do the whole projector thing the whole class period and think students are listen or comprehening which isnt even the case...the samething every class period is BOREING...i believe teachers need to come up with different and new techniques for eeryone...everyone learns different...visual, audio and hands on( me)... I love dr.greenfield's teaching techniques i learn something NEW each class mainly because im a hands on person and love the whole group thing ...i feel as if he's concern about how his students feel and what they got to say verses other teachers arent like that... i think dr.greenfield falls in with the teachers from the older generation....(someone stop me at anytime if im off topic...lol)
I think the older generation has to learn to keep up with youngsters,is it fair no, but it is what it is. Naz said students start texting, and listening to Ipod, and omg!talking while the teacher is talking so disrespectful to teacher and the others who want to learn. The job market is going to cater to the younger people, because they are more advanced, but they aren't going to tolerate alot of mess on the job. Teachers aren't suppose to cater to one group or another they are there to teach, we lucked out with Greenfield, because he is passionate about teaching. I think after a while teachers get burnt out,and then the limitations and time they have play a role in their teaching. I think both ways should be interwoven in classroom settings,so we all learn. In my time (sounds old) the teacher would take your devices until the end of the year or semester.
I think that teachers should still keep up their process of learning. The reason why I say this is because everybody learns different and at different paste so if you have classes for teacher's and giving them creative ideas on how to interact with students, that would be great! I know that it is easier said than done because alot of teacher's are stuck in their ways but if they see their co-workers doing it and learning new methods, they might join in.
Shawna this makes sense, but do they actually have a class teaching teachers personality? I think it is the persons desire to teach, who they are teaching, and how limited they are with creativity in teaching. Wonder how many teachers are just in it for a pay check, and the stability and security of teaching? When the new system was put in place, telling teachers they needed more training or more education alot of them chose a different feild because they said it wasn't worth the time and effort of going to class, and extra training. Donchelle i agree some younger students do look for the fast way out, but why do they need a teacher to motivate them, where is their own personal motivation?
Crystal some of the newcomers are in it for that stability and lack the social skills needed to be an effective teacher. And yeah the business world will sometimes be quick to hire the younger ones but they want some experienced ones too. With the economy like it is they will seek those who know how to do the job at a cheaper expense to the company. Those with the experience and skills will have to gt paid for that.
Just as I stated in class, the professors need to keep up with the changing of the children. The styles that were taught back in the day cannont be used on the students of today and tomorrow. Even if some teachers are stuck in their old ways, the students will suffer and not reach their full potential if they do not get a teacher who can cater to the type of student they are. Not everyone is going to be able to change, completely, but some change has to be made in order to continure to bridge the gap between the teracher, and professors with their students.
This is my opinion...i believe alot of the old 55 and plus needs to retire if they cant stand up and teach the class for 50 mins or an 1 and 15...i believe alot of the teachers are lazy now and they arent in it for the students... Crystal yes in middle school in high school if your devices were out or went off repeatly the teachers would take them and you wouldnt get them back to the end of the year or end of the day...but come on now its college the PROFESSORS are expecting the students to be more responsible and displine...but then you have other professors who treat students as if their little children...like raise your hand to go t the bathroom...etc..college isnt elementary...and yes i exp this at shaw... Crystal i feel you when you say where is the students motavation...but come on now its nothing like knowing your professor cares or is concern about what your doin why you werent in class is everything okay at home...i dnt know about you but in high school i didnt have much motavation from home but having a concerned coached pushed me harder.... i believe the teachers now should want to work and not in it for the money because i believe it cheats the student..again my opinion...a teacher who cares would take the extra step to make sure the student fully understands....
I beleive to the older teacher need to change they way of teacher. they need to enact more with the studends. instead of just reading for the book with no enegry. they need to step their game up.
